Skilled Migration Visa

Skilled Migration Visa in Australia is designed for individuals who have the skills and qualifications required to fill gaps in the Australian labor market. This visa allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia on a permanent or temporary basis, depending on the specific visa subclass.

Same as student stream – for international students completing eligible qualifications in Australia.

Eligibility : Graduated in last 6 months; CRICOS course; English and health requirements.

Duration : 18 months to 4 years depending on stream.

Permissions : Work, study and travel temporarily in Australia.

Special Conditions : Can’t be extended; can apply for PR later.

Points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers without sponsorship.

Eligibility : Occupation on list; skills assessment; meet points test; invitation to apply.

Duration : Permanent.

Permissions : Live, work and study anywhere in Australia; access Medicare; apply for citizenship.

Special Conditions : Must be invited through SkillSelect.

Permanent visa for skilled workers nominated by a state or territory government.

Eligibility : Same as 189 plus nomination by state/territory.

Duration : Permanent.

Permissions : Live and work in nominating state/territory; access public services; pathway to citizenship.

Special Conditions : May be required to live/work in state for minimum period.

Provisional visa for skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia.

Eligibility : Nomination or sponsorship by eligible relative; points test; occupation on list.

Duration : 4 years.

Permissions : Live, work and study in regional areas.

Special Conditions : Must live in regional area to qualify for permanent residency.

For skilled workers nominated by a region or relative to live/work in regional Australia.

Eligibility : Points tested; nominated by state or relative; occupation on relevant list.

Duration : Up to 5 years.

Permissions : Live, work and study in regional areas; pathway to permanent residency.

Special Conditions : Must live in regional area for 3 years before applying for PR.

Subclass 485 - Temporary Graduate Visa
This visa lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies. This visa has two streams:

  • Graduate Work stream – for international students with an eligible qualification who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). A visa in this stream is granted for 18 months from the date of grant.
  • Post-Study Work stream – for international students who graduate with a higher education degree from an Australian education provider, regardless of their field of study. This stream is only available to students who applied for, and were granted, their first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. A visa in this stream can be granted for up to four years from the date the visa is granted, depending on the visa applicant’s qualification.
    • Subclass 189 - Skilled Independent Visa
    The Skilled-Independent visa (subclass 189) is a permanent residence visa for points-tested skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia.

    To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through Skill Select to apply.
    Subclass 190 - Skilled Nominated Visa
    The Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) is a permanent residence visa for points-test skilled workers who want​​​​ to work and live in Australia after being nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency.

    ​​To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through Skill Select to apply.
    Subclass 489 - Skilled Regional(Provisional) Visa
    This visa is for skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in specified regional areas in Australia for four years. There are two pathways for this visa:
  • the Invited Pathway
  • the Extended Stay Pathway – you must hold a provisional visa in subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496.
    • Subclass 491 - Skilled Work Regional(Provisional) Visa
    This is a provisional visa. It is for skilled workers who want to live and work in the regional area.

    Basic Eligibility
    You must:
  • be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
  • have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
  • have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • be invited to apply
  • satisfy the points test

    • With this visa, you can
  • stay in Australia for 5 years
  • live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia</li
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
